STARS (Small Town and Rural Schools) College Network “Counselor Fly-In,”

Amie Miller was recently selected to participate in the STARS (Small Town and Rural Schools) College Network “Counselor Fly-In,” a week-long professional learning experience designed for educators from rural school districts across the country. Out of more than 200 applicants nationwide, Miller was chosen as one of only 32 counselors and career coaches invited to attend.

The February program brought rural educators to three STARS member institutions: Auburn University, The University of Alabama, and Vanderbilt University. Participants spent a full day on each campus engaging in tours, workshops and conversations with admissions and student support teams. The experience provided insight into how these universities recruit, admit and support students from small towns and rural communities, while also offering detailed information about scholarships, financial aid and academic opportunities.

The STARS College Network is a national partnership focused on expanding college access for rural students and families by connecting them with information, advising and opportunities to explore postsecondary education at one of its 32 member institutions.

A key goal of the program is equipping high school teachers, counselors and administrators with valuable knowledge and experiences they can share with their students. By strengthening pathways to college and ensuring that geography does not limit opportunity, STARS works to help rural students better understand and access higher education.

Miller will use the information gained through the experience to help guide Demopolis High School students as they explore college opportunities and plan for their futures.
