Board Meeting Highlights


Highlights from tonight’s board meeting included recognizing three students and coach from the DHS Cross Country team. Deborah Boykin, coach, introduced and praised each student’s accomplishments. Richard Lessmann finished 13th making him an ALL STATE finisher, after having broken 4 previous school records. Hattie Hurst was recognized for her run and congratulated on being offered a scholarship to run at Shelton State. Sara Beth Smith finished in the top half of the group and also broke a school record for cross country.  After the recognition, financial reports for September and October were presented and approved along with the personnel report.  An existing contract and agreement were approved. 

Moving forward, Superintendent Tony Willis presented his report. Academically, he mentioned that the ACT WorkKeys was administered last week and the first testing shows a significantly higher rate of success than previous years.  Ms. White, Ms. Anderson, and Ms..Lee’s third grade classes won free earbuds for students through Ellevation Math usage. He also announced the Teacher of the Year selections that had previously been announced; Ashley Stephens - WES, Emily Windham - USJ, Beth Wideman - DMS, and Rachel White - DHS. It was also mentioned that progress reports went out this past week. 

In the maintenance section of his report, Mr. Willis mentioned that Schneider is finalizing phase 2 details that will monitor and replace HVAC at the schools systemically. Bids/quotes are being obtained for renovation at WES  and DMS interiors to include paint, floors, and plumbing. He also stated the DHS has a fire alarm pre-construction meeting on the 29th. 

As far as extracurricular activities go, the system is buzzing with upcoming games. Varsity Basketball begins this week while the Middle School continues to see success with eighth grade boys remaining undefeated.

DHS Football will travel to BC Rain this Friday for round 2 of the playoffs. There will be a Community Pep Rally in the park at the downtown square this Thursday at 5:45 pm. The band received superior ratings overall at their most recent competition and superior in the following areas : Drum Major, Dance, Feature Twirler, and Percussion. Several field trips are under way and coming up, such as Dauphin Island today and tomorrow by high school science classes, IMC3 competitions with DECA members on Tuesday at UWA, and DMS travels to the Alabama Theater on Wednesday. Trivia Night this week is for USJ at Batters Up at 7 pm - proceeds are donated to the school. DMS had a successful Fall Festival - thanks to all the volunteers and we look forward to others coming up soon. The DCSF Cornhole tournament was a success - raising over $1000 . Congrats to Tyson and Paul Bucurel for winning! Lastly, it was mentioned that today was World Kindness Day and this month has been proclaimed Thank Alabama Teachers Month by Governor Ivey.  A complete look at the board minutes will be uploaded to the DCS website: www.dcsedu.com as soon as they are available.
