Saturday was supposed to be a day full of smiles and Christmas cheer. The Christmas on the River parade in Demopolis had just concluded. Henry, son of Katie and Chris Blight, a seven year old boy who was visiting his grandparents, David and Nita Grizzard, was headed back to their home when a piece of candy lodged in his throat. In what is being called a divine appointment, Andrea Piedra, a senior from Demopolis High School sees this family in need and immediately jumps into action.

Henry's mother described Andrea as “a calm breath that made it all happen. She was able to be calm in an emergency. She did all of it and didn’t hesitate for a moment. We all panicked and she stopped to help a complete stranger.”

Andrea is the Vice President of the Health Occupations Students Association or HOSA at DHS led by teacher Nadine Rodgers. Andrea has been a part of the Healthcare Career Tech Pathway for four years and plans to pursue a career in the health sciences field. She has recently been accepted to UAB. Monday morning Andrea was helping organize a blood drive. She has not stopped being a hero even after this weekend’s events. Demopolis City Schools is so proud of Andrea putting into practice what she has learned through this valuable program.
