Board Meeting Highlights

Demopolis City Schools Board celebrated outstanding educators, heroes, and approved initiatives, continuing their commitment to excellence throughout our system.

Superintendent Tony Willis recognized District Elementary Teacher of the Year,  Ashley Stephens, an elementary school teacher renowned for her dedication and innovative teaching methods. Stephens' passion for education and her ability to inspire young minds set her apart in the competitive field.

In a separate acknowledgment, Mr. Willis recognized the Secondary Teacher of the Year, Rachel White. Her exceptional contributions to the high school English class have not only shaped young minds but also inspired them.

The board also recognized Andrea Piedra's heroic actions at COTR, where she played a crucial role in a life-saving incident. This earned her the admiration and gratitude of the entire community. Alongside Andrea Piedra, the board acknowledged another hero in the form of Nadine Rodgers, a CTE Instructor. With the guidance and support of Mrs. Rodgers' and the HOSA pathway, Andrea knew exactly what to do in a stressful situation.

The district announced successful reconciliation of financial accounts, ensuring transparency and accountability. Notable financial decisions included approving bids for the renovation of the oldest building at DMS, painting the front interior and plumbing upgrades at WES, and drainage work on the softball field.

Two hires were approved pending acceptance and certification.

The district celebrated the approval of three substantial grants, each totaling $350,000 ($1.5 million), allocated to WES, USJ, and DMS. These grants, generously provided by Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, will primarily focus on HVAC improvements, contributing to a healthier and more comfortable learning environment.

The board approved agreements with Shelton State Community College for a dual enrollment credit program and with UWA to sponsor an apprenticeship program.

Approval of the custodial bid for US Jones was also granted.

The board approved overnight trips for DMS Junior Beta, DHS BETA Convention, and DHS DECA CDC, providing students with unique opportunities for experiential learning and growth.

With an eye toward the next semester, the board announced a strategic push to encourage student attendance, recognizing the crucial role regular attendance plays in academic success.

These recent recognitions, initiatives, and commitments underline the district's dedication to fostering a dynamic and thriving educational community.
