Did You Know?

DCS, did you know?

Over the break, Demopolis City Schools' athletes and head football coach made the news! We are so proud of what our athletes and coaches have accomplished and continue to do!

Head coach Lance Tucker was named Coach of the Year for the Class 4A-7A All-Area high school football team for 2023.

From TuscaloosaNews.com:

"Tucker, a former Alabama football quarterback and son of Waldon Tucker, the former winningest coach in Alabama high school football history when he retired in 2010, made quite the coaching debut his first season back in West Alabama. He led the Tigers to a 10-3 overall record and a 5-0 finish in 5A-Region 3, their fourth-straight region title. Demopolis also made a run in the AHSAA Class 5A state playoffs, making it to the third round before ultimately falling 20-17 to Eufaula."

On the All-Area Football First Team, we see running back Keishawn Rowser, a junior at DHS who rushed the ball 182 for 1349 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also recorded 8 catches for 100 yards. We also see Jamarcus Vawters, junior, who helped the defense that only allowed 15.6 points per game! Tony Zinnerman, a senior offensive lineman, helped the Tigers earn an average of 26.8 points each game.  Second Team added wide receiver Dalyn Jackson, a senior who brought in 66 passes for 251 yards and 8 touchdowns.  On defense, Thomas Bedsole, senior, was a key part as edge rusher and also saw time as a linebacker. Dyllon Williams, junior, was one of the leading defensive backs.  Several players made the honorable mention list: Ethan Malone, Alexander Mullings, Jay Johnson, and Jakoby Collins.

Cross Country athletes named to the 2023 All-Area Teams included Richard Lessmann, who was chosen to be on the First Team  because of a  13th place finish in the Class 5A state meet with a time of 16:39.17. Sara Beth Smith was named to the Girls' First Team with a time of 22:13.24 and finish in 58th place at the Class 5A state meet. Another DHS senior, Hattie Hurst made the Girls' Second Team.

DHS Volleyball made its mark too when Sara Helms made the First Team All Area Volleyball Team. This junior racked up 236 kills, 19 solo blocks, 12 block assists and 85 aces this season.

In addition to the All-Area  teams, several of our athletes were mentioned in Tuscaloosa Area’s 99 student athletes to look out for in 2024. Keshawn Rowser: Football; Sara Helms: Volleyball; Alaysha Jones: Basketball.

We look forward to seeing these and all of our athletes succeed in year 2024!
