National School Counseling Week

Today, DCS spotlights Valtina Bowden, counselor at U.S. Jones Elementary. Mrs. Bowden has dedicated 25 years to education, with 13 years specifically as a school counselor.

Her  inspiration to become an elementary school counselor stemmed from her older sister, Mary Griffin, who played a pivotal role in helping me navigate some challenging times. Her support and guidance not only helped overcome obstacles but also instilled the importance of emotional well-being and resilience.

This experience ignited a passion to pursue a career where she could make a similar impact on young lives. As a school counselor, she works with children during their developmental years, providing tools and resources to develop strong social-emotional skills and cope with challenges. She says, “It’s incredibly rewarding to see the positive influence my work has on students’ growth and success.”

Her favorite thing about being a school counselor is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students and staff. The role allows her to impact others in the school community, teaching social-emotional skills for success and supporting educators in meeting student needs. She stated that it is rewarding to be there for students in their time of need, empowering them to grow and connecting families with resources. Making a positive impact on so many people is truly fulfilling.

DCS loves having Mrs. Bowden at U.S. Jones!!!
