April Highlights

Highlights from tonight’s Board Meeting included recognition of DCS District Spelling Bee Champion, 6th grader Joidyn Johnson, and Westside instructional aide Patricia Harris for eleven years of perfect attendance.

During the meeting, the approval of new personnel was announced. DCS would like to welcome Sarah Kynard as an Elementary Education Teacher and Elizabeth Russell and Beverly Hogan as substitutes. Stacy Wright’s resignation as bookkeeper was also approved. A host of summer school employees were approved for all four schools. Action items that were discussed and approved included the financial report, new job descriptions for an Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Basketball Operations, and a supplement template for additional responsibilities. Approval was given after a presentation made by Schneider Electric to continue Phase II in addition to a change order in Phase I. The summer work calendar was approved. Bids for renovations at WES and DMS, furniture for WES and USJ, and approval for six renewal subscriptions for curriculum and the purchase of two new curriculum resources using ESSR monies were all approved. Mrs. Carolyn Moore commended the staff involved for their foresight in extending this curriculum in light of the end of ESSR funds, stating that DCS was set up for success for the coming years. The inventory disposition list was approved as well as a first reading of the Board Policy 5.73 to reflect current terminology. Consent items given the go-ahead include an overnight CTE field trip, an overnight soccer tournament trip, and an overnight band trip.

Superintendent Tony Willis provided an update during his report:

Academics:

  • ACAP is underway - ELA completed and math starting this week for grades 2-8.

  • PreACT results are due to be released this week by ALSDE.

  • DHS selected as a Banner School Finalist in Alabama for their Student Success Teams.

  • Summer learning plans are in full swing, and preparations are being made for another full schedule at all four campuses.

Maintenance and Operations:

  • River City Lawn Care has our campuses looking good - we appreciate the good work they are doing.

  • Schneider has been onsite making repairs and troubleshooting thermostat controls.

  • The fire alarm at DHS is nearing completion.

  • The new Industrial maintenance shop for students is in its final steps of being completed and in compliance with regulations and codes for students (formerly maintenance at HS).

Extracurricular Activities:

  • Baseball is Area Champions and begins playoffs this week as the host of Mobile Christian.

  • Tennis, golf, soccer, and softball have all posted impressive wins these past few weeks and are poised for good playoff runs.

Community and PR:

  • DHS Adulting Day was another huge success - thanks to our community partners for assisting in preparing our students for life after high school.

  • City league spring sports kick off, involving a host of DCS students, on May 20, 2024, at 5:15 pm.
