The May Board of Education meeting opened with a special recognition for Olen Kerby, honoring his 10 years of dedicated service to Demopolis City Schools. This meeting marked his final one as a board member. The board expressed sincere appreciation for his commitment and the many contributions he has made in helping the school system grow and achieve success over the past decade.
During the meeting, the board also elected new officers. Betsy Stephens was elected as Board Chairman, and Bobby Armstead was elected as Vice Chairman.
Additional highlights from the meeting included:
Approval of a proposal from Duncan/Coker Associates, PC to address ongoing drainage issues at Westside Elementary, U.S. Jones Elementary and Demopolis High School.
Approval of a proposal from Lanthan Associates Architects to replace the roof on the DCS maintenance building.
Approval of an agreement with Gorrie Regan to implement the Attendance on Demand system, a modern clock-in/clock-out system that will allow employees to use their cellular devices for attendance tracking.
Approval of the amended School Calendar for 2025-2026.
Finally, it was noted that the last day for students will be Thursday, with Friday serving as the final day for faculty.
