Demopolis City Schools officially launched the 2026-2027 school year with an exciting Teacher Institute filled with encouragement, recognition, and a celebration of the partnerships that make our district stronger.
The day began with a generous breakfast provided by Church of the Highlands, giving faculty and staff an opportunity to gather, reconnect, and prepare for the year ahead. We are grateful for community partners who continually invest in our educators and help make the start of each school year special.
The highlight of Teacher Institute was an inspiring presentation by nationally recognized speaker Don Barfield, with the message “Teaching Ain’t for Wimps!” Through humor, real-life experiences, and heartfelt encouragement, Barfield challenged educators to remember the heart of their profession. His message centered on three essential ingredients every classroom needs to thrive: Love, Structure, and Discipline. As teachers prepare to welcome students, these principles will continue to guide the work of creating safe, supportive, and engaging learning environments where every student can succeed.
Teacher Institute also provided an opportunity to recognize the incredible work taking place across our district through the continued support of the Demopolis City Schools Foundation.
The Foundation presented the Hugh Lloyd Excellence Award to Margie Jackson, whose project provided new choir robes for the Tiger Tones Choir.
In addition, U.S. Jones Elementary School was recognized as the recipient of the School Fest Award, celebrating the school's outstanding participation and support of this year's School Fest fundraiser.
This year's School Fest was another tremendous success, raising more than $26,000 to support educational opportunities across Demopolis City Schools. The success of the event reflects the generosity of our sponsors, volunteers, families, and community members who continue to invest in our students and teachers.
As we begin another school year, Demopolis City Schools is reminded that student success is made possible through the collective efforts of dedicated educators, supportive families, engaged community partners, and organizations like the Demopolis City Schools Foundation. Together, we are building a brighter future for every student.
