Opening New Chapters: DHS Expands Reading Access for Students
Every student deserves the opportunity to experience a great book!
Demopolis High School librarian Kelley Tarpley is helping to open new doors for students with visual impairments through a partnership with the Alabama Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Disabled. The partnership gives eligible DHS students access to free audiobooks and other accessible reading materials, making it easier for them to read, learn, and explore new interests.
Through the program, students can access books in audio or braille formats. Materials can be downloaded directly to a personal device or delivered by mail at no cost, giving students greater independence and more choices in how they read.
The Regional Library operates through the Alabama Public Library Service and is part of the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled network, a division of the Library of Congress. Together with its subregional library in Talladega, the program provides accessible reading opportunities to more than 8,000 eligible Alabama residents.
By bringing these resources to DHS students, Mrs. Tarpley is helping ensure that a visual impairment does not stand between a student and the joy of discovering a new story, gaining new knowledge, or becoming a lifelong reader.

Tuesday, September 8 — Students are OUT of school while our teachers participate in a Professional Development Day.
