
Every First Grade student was asked to create a character pumpkin. The character was from a story they read. They also completed a report describing their character and the book. Many skills and standards were covered while completing this activity, not to mention an opportunity to demonstrate artistic skills and have fun with their families.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be virtual learning days. Packets are due upon your return to school. If you were absent and did not receive your packet today, you may complete the work when you return.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month which is also represented by the color red. Today our staff wants to bring awareness to Dyslexia and emphasize our desire to provide our students with successful reading instruction in the following areas: Comprehension, Fluency, Vocabulary, Phonics and Phonemic Awareness. Westside is committed to implementing the science of reading in our daily instruction. Let’s go WES!!!!!!!


This week’s “leader of the week” is Zaniya Fluker. She is a 2nd grade student in Mrs. Basinger’s class. Zaniya makes good choices and respects her school. We are proud of leaders like Zaniya at WES.


Congratulations to Mrs. Stanford for receiving a grant from the Demopolis City Schools Foundation for technology themed trade books.

Please take this time to wash all backpacks, lunchboxes, and jackets. We hope to keep all of our students free from illness. Please do not return to school until you have been fever free for at least 24 hours!!

Mrs. Basinger’s class enjoyed making “beaded number lines” to use during math time!


STEM challenge in Mrs. Little’s first grade - Students were challenged with building a fence for their five little pumpkins.


Mrs. Martin’s class had another spooky math lesson today! After reading Ten Timid Ghosts, they created haunted houses with ghosts. To put ghosts on their house, they had to roll a dice and tell a number greater or less than their roll.
